Welcome to a new article in your favorite section, "How Did It End?".
Today I will tell you how the light novel series Oregairu Shin ended,
which serves as a direct sequel to the main story and was published in a
total of six mini-volumes.
Before we begin, I would like to point out that chronologically, this
story takes place right after the end of Volume 14, when Hachiman and
Yukino finally start their relationship. So here we will see if their love
was able to overcome the new obstacles.
Alright, let's get started.
SUMMARY
Hachiman and Yukino's new life as an official couple is soon surrounded
by the usual chaos. Everything is set in motion when Komachi Hikigaya
finally enters Sobu High School. She wastes no time and, under the
tutelage of Iroha Isshiki, takes the reins of the Service Club as the new
president.
This new stage forces Hachiman, Yukino, and Yui to remain in the club as
supporting members. However, Iroha's intention goes beyond helping
Komachi; she seeks to keep the group together so that her own fun does not
come to an end, even if that means testing the new couple's
patience.
While Hachiman tries to process that he now has a girlfriend, Yukino
decides to take a major step and invites him to her apartment for a
private dinner. During this encounter, both struggle against their
introverted nature, trying to act with the closeness expected of a couple.
Despite the awkward silences, they manage to share moments of genuine
affection, although the shadow of the Yukinoshita family always seems to
be present through Haruno's calls and text messages.
The real tension moves to a much more formal setting: a dinner with
Yukino's mother. Hachiman is forced to attend an upscale restaurant to
face the family's "Final Boss".
At this meeting, Yukino's mother does not beat around the bush and
questions the nature of their relationship, suggesting that Hachiman is
now part of the Yukinoshita sphere of influence. Instead of yielding to
social pressure, Hachiman defends his bond with Yukino as something that
does not require external validation or traditional labels. This response,
loaded with his cynical yet honest logic, gets Yukino's mother to give him
a vote of confidence, although Haruno warns him that he is now trapped in
an adult world where every word has a price.
On the other hand, Yui Yuigahama's emotional conflict takes an unexpected
turn. After feeling displaced, Yui receives advice from Iroha, who
encourages her to stop being the "good girl" who always sacrifices herself
for others. Iroha convinces her that being selfish is a part of youth, and
this motivates Yui to radically change her stance.
Consequently, Yui stops hiding her feelings and begins to intervene more
in Hachiman and Yukino's space. During the planning of an exchange event,
Yui looks for opportunities to be alone with Hachiman, constantly
reminding him that even though he is dating her best friend, she has not
stopped loving him. This "greedy" attitude generates a tense atmosphere in
the club room, where the glances between the three of them say it
all.
The situation explodes in a definitive conversation between the two
friends. Yui, with a resolve she had never shown before, confesses to
Yukino that she will keep trying to win Hachiman's affection. She makes it
clear that she values their friendship above all else, but that will not
stop her in her desire to be with him.
Yukino, who has gone through an immense maturation process, does not
react with jealousy or bitterness. She accepts Yui as her rival,
understanding that their friendship is strong enough to withstand that
truth. Yukino trusts Hachiman, but she also accepts that the path they
have chosen will not be one of absolute peace, but rather one full of
shared conflicts.
Hachiman realizes that his search for something "genuine" has evolved. It
is no longer just about understanding each other, but about learning to
live with the pain and desires of the people around him. Despite Yui's
insistence and Iroha's constant provocations, he reaffirms deep down that
Yukino is his main heroine.
In the end, the Service Club continues to operate under a strange new
normality. There are no magic solutions or fairy-tale endings; what
remains is a group of young people who have decided to be honest about
their flaws. Hachiman and Yukino continue to strengthen their
relationship, accepting that there will always be someone trying to enter
their circle.
No matter what, Hachiman has already made his decision and has no
intention of looking back. He is committed to Yukino, and she feels ready
to face both her family and friends with her head held high. Now, both
will write a new story together, knowing that youth is complicated, messy,
and sometimes a bit unfair, but totally worth living if it is by the side
of the right person.
